Open Radical Prostatectomy
The open operation is done through a 3 inch incision above the pubic hairline. The prostate, seminal vesicles and pelvic lymph glands are removed. The hospital stay is generally between three to seven days. A catheter is required after the surgery and will remain in place for two weeks. One of the arguments against laparoscopic/robotic surgery is it does not allow for any tactile sensation and runs the greater risk of leaving cancer behind, however, there is enough evidence against this outcome in the literature as well.
