Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
The Robotic prostatectomy is fast replacing open prostatectomy and offers a number of unique benefits including:
- it is minimally invasive;
- generally results in shorter hospital stays;
- a reduction in blood loss which consequently reduces the need for blood transfusions;
- significantly less pain;
- a faster recovery time and a quick return to normal activities;
- less risk of infection;
- early reports are suggestive of improved erectile function and continence; and
- lower bladder neck stricture rates.
The operation lasts between two to three hours and on average patients spend two nights in the hospital. As with the open surgery, a catheter is required but it is removed one week after the surgery.
