Robotic Radical Prostatectomy

The Robotic prostatectomy is fast replacing open prostatectomy and offers a number of unique benefits including:

• it is minimally invasive;
• generally results in shorter hospital stays;
• a reduction in blood loss which consequently reduces the need for blood transfusions;
• significantly less pain;
• a faster recovery time and a quick return to normal activities;
• less risk of infection;
• early reports are suggestive of improved erectile function and continence; and
• lower bladder neck stricture rates.

The operation lasts between two to three hours and on average patients spend two nights in the hospital.  As with the open surgery, a catheter is required but it is removed one week after the surgery.
