Hydrocele

A hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac surrounding a testicle that causes swelling in the scrotum and may cause pain.  Commonly seen in newborns, hydroceles usually disappear in infants without treatment during the first year of life.  Older boys and adult men can develop a hydrocele due to inflammation, infection or injury within the scrotum and at other times it may be congenital or the cause may be unknown.  Surgery to repair or remove a hydrocele will be recommended if the hydrocele is large or uncomfortable.  The surgery involves opening the hydrocele sac and removing the fluid and/or portions of the sac.  A combination of stitches, staples, tape or other methods may be used to close the incision.
