Varicocele

A varicocele is when veins within the scrotum become abnormally enlarged.  Varicoceles are common in adolescent boys and young men.  A varicocele is generally harmless, does not cause any pain and is often described as a ‘bag of worms’ in the scrotum.  In most cases the varicoceles do not need any treatment and are observed safely.  In extreme cases, if left untreated, the condition may stunt the growth of the affected testes and lead to infertility in adulthood.  Active treatment is usually only considered when the left testicle is growing more slowly than the right, there is pain or it is causing fertility problems.  There are a variety of surgical methods used to treat varicoceles and these will be explained to you by your urologist.
